I'm Sam Schreim, and I'm part of one of the most secretive industries in the world - an industry that comprises a select group of senior strategy consultants globally who have perfected the art of chart-based storytelling. This skill is becoming increasingly sought-after and popular in the business world.

The truth is, everyone needs to write and deliver presentations. From professionals and entrepreneurs to consultants and public servants, almost everyone is involved in creating or delivering presentations.

For instance, my wife, who's a business owner, is currently preparing a pitch to secure VC funding and a business loan for her startup. My 15-year-old daughter is running for high school club presidency and will be presenting her plans to her classmates. My nephew, who's in college, is constantly presenting his course projects and is now gearing up for his thesis defense.

Whether you use Powerpoint, Tableau, Prezi, or any other presentation software, you're in the right place if you're someone who needs, uses, writes, or designs presentations or decks.

My own career journey has taken me from corporate America at GE to the secretive and highly specialized world of strategy consulting. I've had the privilege of advising top executives and working on sensitive and confidential strategic issues for leading corporations, states, and the public sector. During my time as a strategy consultant, I came to realize that creating presentations and slides was a significant part of the job, and that mastering this skill was crucial to success in the field.

However, I struggled with presentation design during my early years in the corporate world. Despite receiving corporate training, my slides failed to accurately reflect the hard work, major findings, and accomplishments of my projects. As a result, my excellent work went unnoticed and unrecognized.

I tried every available commercial method and purchased numerous books, but none of these resources addressed the root cause of my presentation issues. Eventually, I realized that I needed to adopt new methods practiced by elite consulting firms, and to forget everything I had learned commercially.

Through brute-force learning and continuous criticism and improvement, I was able to learn and perfect my presentation skills. I had to start fresh with a new approach and adopt practices used by the world's highest-paid professionals. Looking back, I now recognize the common myths and pitfalls that held me back early in my career.

MYTH #1

Look & Feel are the MOST Important factors in a presentation

Many people think a professional presentation is about the look and feel, or how beautiful or nice the design looks. Right? Wrong.

I am not saying it’s okay to have ugly slides. However, getting your charts and slides to look professionally designed can be done in a snap with templates and cheap tools like think-cell or Empowersuite or by sending them to an offshore designer for $10 an hour.

STC is the kind of skill that I am talking about here. It's one that people are paid 100x that.

For improving the look and feel, I can send my slides to offshore designers who are available 24/7 to clean up the designs according to my specs and templates. And there you have it; creating good-looking slides is the simplest and cheapest task. That’s why it is not the most important aspect of a presentation. So, if the design is not the most important aspect, what is?

The answer is horizontal logic, which I will get to in a minute, but before I do, let me tell you about one of my biggest challenges that I faced as a strategy consultant and the one thing that I didn’t mention earlier. That is what happened to me when I finally mastered the skills of my senior team member and got promoted to manager. I thought I’d made it and was out of the woods. But I found myself facing yet another wall.

To succeed in the field of strategy or make it to partnership, I had to build a team. That meant teaching my skills to newbies. I had to ramp them up the speed very quickly, or else I would be spending all my time reviewing and fixing their work and would again be faced with the up-or-out firm policy. The alternative was to do both my work and my team’s work until they were up to speed with the process, which meant sleepless nights and no weekends.

That’s why I first had to avoid letting my apprentices run through the same issues that I faced when I first started. That meant asking them to ignore any commercial guides, methods and approaches that they may’ve learned in the past. So, I am faced with the fact that I had to develop my own training material, and if you leave with nothing else after you’ve read this, leave with this one lesson that I learned the hard way:

Lesson #1:

Don’t follow commercial methods

To make a long story short, I started developing this method in 2010, and it took me almost a decade to get the method right, which you are now experiencing and will shortly have at your fingertips.

MYTH #2

Start with the data and Tell your Story with Data

Most people think starting with the data on hand before structuring the presentation is the way to go, and that your story should be told with data. Right? Wrong.

Beginning by Storytelling with Data means data comes first. And when you follow this approach, it would be like having a “solution that’s looking for a problem.”

Data is there to support your headline message claim, not the other way around. That’s why if you started to build your story based on available data, you’d be going about this backwards.

Moreover, not all charts are data-driven. In fact, almost half or more of the charts in professional and business presentations are based on conceptual or qualitative charts and frameworks.

Fact: Not all visuals can rely on numbers and data to back your claims.

How should you go about this instead?

Lesson #2:

Horizontal Logic comes before Vertical Logic

If you have not heard these terms before, let me take a minute to explain them to you.

Horizontal Logic is the flow of your story or the sequence of the slides and charts in your presentation.

The basic idea of Horizontal Logic is that if you were to pull only the headlines from your charts in sequence and read them out loud, they would tell a story. The narrative or storyline extracted from the headlines in the charts should flow flawlessly.

Think of Horizontal Logic as the glue that holds an entire presentation deck together through the narrative of your story.

Every single slide or chart that makes up the horizontal deck is what’s commonly referred to as Vertical Logic.

Both “vertical” and “horizontal” flows are referred to as “Logic” because Vertical Logic sets the rules of the logical relationship that exists between the headline message and the supporting content in the visual chart that is located underneath each headline. While Horizontal Logic sets the rules for the flow logic of the headlines that makes up the narrative of your storyline.

MYTH #3

Keep Your Presentation Short

You should keep your presentation as short as possible and limit the number of slides in a presentation. Right? Wrong again.

I am constantly being told that I have to keep my presentations down to only a few slides if I have an executive-level presentation. The rationale that I’ve been given for this stupid rule is that executives are very busy people and only have a little time on their hands. The result: whenever I listened to this advice, I always ended up with either too little in a presentation or too much on individual slides, and my decks and presentations were disastrous.

Lesson #3:

Always maintain the “One Message Per Slide” and the “So What Factor” rules

You need to understand that persuasion is attained through simple slides. In fact, storytelling with charts is based on the principle of "less is more". However, while you need to “keep things as simple as possible, but not simpler”.

It takes just as long or less to present two messages on two slides as it would take to present two messages on a single slide.

Therefore, making a presentation short in terms of time, may be one of your objectives, but the presentation should never be shorter in terms of content.

Lastly, when you complete your slides, always ask yourself, "So what?".

This litmus test lets you ascertain whether your content, visual, and message hit the presentation's goal and objectives and the claim that you are making. If the content, the chart or the visual fails this test, remove it, improve it, or you'll lose your audience.

All in all, after facing the challenges that I mentioned earlier, I decided to structure what I’ve learned and combined decades' worth of knowledge into a Master Framework that’s packaged into a simple toolkit for use by anyone, whatever their background.

I designed the first prototype more than a decade ago and put it into use by testing it on the rookies on my team. While the pilot initially worked for some people, it didn’t always work for everyone. It took me several years and iterations to test and refine different models and sequences to make them universal.

I realized that if I wanted it to succeed and quickly scale my team, I had to make the tool work for everyone and anyone in less than a day.

To do so, I had to test it on a larger pool of people and get their feedback. So I offered it conditionally to senior colleagues of mine, who snatched it and experienced amazing results on their team.

Over the five years that followed, I wanted to make it work for just about anyone, not just the consulting industry employees. So, I gave it away to whoever needed to create presentations and continuously gathered feedback from my colleagues and the general public until I was able to package it into the simple toolkit that it is today:

A simple system consisting of a 5-step framework that can be consumed in less than 2 hours to get anyone to proficiency in StoryTelling with Charts (STC).

If you’d like to get your hands on this system, I’ve created a toolkit that you will absolutely love.

My senior consulting colleagues started saying:

"Fresh college grads who have never seen strategy decks before started creating amazing advanced-level charts on their first day."

"I could not believe how easy it became to induce people into the process."

In fact, I made this toolkit so easy to consume and understand that I tested it on my 14-year-old daughter, who now relies on the framework in all her class projects. Now, she consistently wins class projects and ranks in the top of her class.

Once you try this, you'll never approach presentations the same way.

You'll discover that it's the only user’s manual you'll ever need to create presentations and decks that will wow your audience leaving them asking for more.

You'll find that you don't need to worry about data analysis paralysis; the system will take you directly to the few data points needed to build a compelling storyline with impactful visuals.

You'll be able to address the "So What?" factor litmus test head-on with at least an 80% fail rate reduction compared to traditional methods

IMPORTANT

This is not a course; it's better. It's a toolkit with a tutorial that takes less than 2 hours to consume. A course usually takes days and weeks to master, but this toolkit works like an instruction manual.

Think of it like assembling an IKEA piece of furniture. You don't need to understand how the design was developed; you only need to follow the instructions in the user's manual. You know that in the end, you'd have built the piece you've seen on display or in the catalog before purchasing it.

You can put this toolkit immediately to use as you'll get cheat sheets, step-by-step frameworks, fill-in-the-blanks, and actual charts that you can copy/paste into your presentation.

The framework is broken down into 5 phases and steps. Each stage has its own templates and frameworks.

You will also receive access to a series of instructional videos. Each video is around 10 minutes long.

In the videos, I've made the instructions so simple, and they work like this:

1. Fill in the blanks (Framework)

2. Look-up chart (Cheat sheet)

3. Copy-paste (Use templates provided)

4. Resize and reformat

5. Fill in the blanks

As I’ve mentioned, this is nothing like any commercialized product or course you may have seen elsewhere.

This product was designed for highly paid professionals and strategy consultants who get paid four-figures an hour to do what this toolkit helps you accomplish. And the best part is that this product was tailored to work for anyone, regardless of background, age, or prior experience.

Non-comparable commercial courses and products that contain only video tutorials, which, by the way, teach you the wrong approach, cost at least $1,000.

If you were to look for similar materials, templates, and cheat sheets that are included with this toolkit on the web, you would be raking in additional hundreds of dollars, which won’t give you the kind of professional-level content that you need.

And the biggest value you’ll get from this toolkit is “Time.” You don’t need to spend days or weeks learning ineffective methods or methods that send you in the wrong direction.

You’ll only spend 2 hours consuming the entire system’s content and be on your way to building professional-grade presentations. Time is a currency that you cannot take back or replace after it’s gone.

If I were to value the time and opportunity cost, I’d save from giving this toolkit to newbies or trainees, it would be worth at least $100,000 per employee.

Don’t forget; you’ll walk away with a system that delivers instant results. You don’t have to spend time going through courses or taking endless classes.

But you can have the entire Toolkit for just $47

Remember how I struggled with mastering STC at the start of my career? I felt HOPELESS and OVERWHELMED during those moments. But more importantly, I found nothing in the whole world to give to my team that can teach them these methods.

This toolkit will prevent you from having such feelings. You see, in many ways, mastering STC is very similar to learning a new language, but surely not as difficult as learning languages, but the process is the same.

If you wanted to say something to express yourself, would your mind start with the letters of the alphabet and all the words in the dictionary to build that sentence? Heck NO!

Think of it this way, vertical logic paints the pictures of your message, and horizontal logic takes the pictures and stitches them together into a story that we compare to a map.

Most methods out there teach you how to design and visualize nice charts or graphs with data, which is the easiest to learn.

However, what are good charts without a compelling narrative? Charts alone rarely produce results. Just like learning vocabulary, it is not a language without learning how to put it in a meaningful sentence.

I vividly recall how I struggled and spent countless hours trying to perfect my decks.

1. I tried to draw on my education, expertise and business knowledge, math and engineering science background to conduct good analysis and develop good insights 一 failed.

2. I spent hours creating beautiful and colorful designs 一 failed.

3. I crammed in as much as I could on one slide, so I would shorten my presentations and not have too many slides 一 failed.

4. I purchased and read every book, and training on the market 一 failed.

To succeed, I had to forget everything I learned or was taught in the past, all the books I’ve read, and all the methods I’ve seen, and switched to learning from the masters: Namely, senior strategy consultants.

What did I conclude in the process being the main problem? I hope it’s obvious by now:

I had to shift my focus to Horizontal Logic

The framework outlined in the toolkit took me over a decade of hands-on experience, real presentations, and training to refine and get to its current form.

I didn't become an expert by reading other people's books. Instead, I practiced this profession for over two decades, and I preach what I practice in real life.

I'm confident you will love what STC will do for you.

So confident that I've decided to take all the risks from your shoulders and give you a full 60 days to go through the program and put it into practice.

During this time, you can decide if it is worth the price. If not, email us at [email protected], and we'll send you a refund right away!

You don't need to spend 15 years learning the art of storytelling with charts (like I did).

You can use the STC Toolkit and start crafting and presenting.

STC Toolkit Is Your SHORTCUT!

  • Even if you are a complete newbie at storytelling with charts and hate the actual process of creating them. (I’ve been there!)

  • Even if you have never successfully created or delivered presentations. (Been there too...)

  • Even if you’ve created overly complicated presentations before and failed. (I’ve done that often!)
